Long time ago, before the coming of the Spaniards, vast tracts of land were filled by poor Filipino farmers in a once very remote barrio in Bogo, Cebu that has now become one of its 29 barangay.

            

So vast and wide were some tracts of land that it had become almost unbearable for one worker to do some weeding in the middle part of the land under the scorching heat of the heat of the sun. It had, therefore, become imperatively necessary to have a shelter while working and so, giving support to the adage which says that necessity is the mother of invention, the poor farmer invented a unique contraption which sufficiently gave him shelter from the heat of the sun while working.

            

This contraption consists simply of four poles or straight branches of wood with diameters of between two and three inches and lengths of 5 to 6 feet. The leases of the poles are settled on the ground and the upper portion, at a few inches from the tip is joined by a square. The size of which depends on and usually smaller than the size of the area at the base. The square at the top eventually becomes the roof when coconut palms or leaves are placed on top of it to provide shade or shelter below. This contraption is called “Kayang” by the local folks. Not long after the first “Kayang” was made, it had become common sight for some tracts of land to be dotted with “kayangs” numbering as many as there were workers. Slowly, and as time went by, the place became well known for these “kayang” until this contraption also became the name of the place. Finally, the name revolved into “CAYANG” which is now the name of the Barangay.
