COGON

Barangay Cogon seems to have a rather colorful legend which goes back to the early Spanish times. It was told that during the early Spanish colonization, the area that is now Barangay Cogon is said to be principally covered by tall and luxuriant “cogon” grass.

During the Filipino uprising against the Spanish authorities led by the Katipuneros, there were also pockets of resistance by insurgents in Bogo. It was said that the insurgents called “insurectos” or “indios” by the Spaniards, used to hide in the tall cogon grass when pursued by the Spaniards. The last known leader of the “insurectos” was said to be a certain Lasala who was purportedly a cousin of the late Don Pedro Rodriguez who was and still is simply “Nyor Indong” to most Bogohanons. Nyor Indong was said to be instrumental in the eventual surrender of Lasala to the Spanish authorities. Meanwhile, the tall cogon grasses became the prominent referral to the place until it was made years later as the officials have of the now Barangay Cogon.
