Bogo City pride Noel Tillor finally topped the men’s open division of the Borneo International Marathon.
borneo international marathon
source: www.borneomarathon.com
The 31-year-old Tillor finished the 42-kilometer course in 2 hours, 48 minutes and 13 seconds.

Tillor’s victory marked the first time that a Filipino won the title in the prestigious race.

It was a great comeback win for Tillor, who missed his opportunity in the last two editions of the event in 2014 and 2015. He placed second in his first try in 2014, where he finished in 2:49:21 behind Kenyan John Waithaka Njiha. Another disappointment came the following year as he was forced to stop three kilometers from the finish line due to an injury.

The third time was a charm as Tillor made sure that he would emerge victorious as he took the men’s open crown of the race that featured 8,500 runners.

THE Bohol Paddlers’ Association (BPA) Team A ruled the 200-meter Dragon boat exhibition matches last Saturday at the Polambato Wharf in Bogo City.

BPA-A won the exhibition match in 50.84 seconds, beating Team Bogo (52.07) in the finals. Cebu City’s Grupo Habagat failed to make the finals after losing the semifinals to Bogo, finishing in 55.88 seconds to Bogo’s 54.33.

Retired General Carlos Holganza, founder of the Cebu Dragon Boat Association (CBDA), expressed his satisfaction with the successful event.

“I am happy how the event turned out. I can see that there is more interest now,” said Holganza. Four teams joined the event, including two squads from BPA.

Holganza said they plan to hold another friendly dragon boat competition two months from now in Southern Cebu.

“We will be discussing our plans with the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC). We could possibly hold it at SRP Talisay City,” said Randy Su, Habagat Outdoor Equipment proprietor and the co-founder of CBDA.

CBDA hopes that by the end of the year, they can already set regular competitions.

Cebu First Dragon Boat Race to be Held on May 23

dragon boat race
source: http://lifestyle.inquirer.net/
(PNA) -- The first-ever dragon boat race in Cebu will be held on May 23 in Bogo City, Northern Cebu.

“We have been planning about this a long time ago already,” said Randy Su, a commissioner of the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission (CPSC) in an interview here with the Philippine News Agency Saturday night.

“This is one of our alternative sports program,” said Su, president of the Habagat Outdoor Equipment and organizer of the Carera Habagat Adventure Race.

Local paddlers and would-be paddlers in Cebu were also invited to first join the two-day basic dragon boat clinic on May 21-22.

The clinic will be conducted by a national coach from Manila and from the Philippine Dragon Boat Federation.

“We also have invited two dragon boat teams from Bohol to play for exhibition races on May 23,” said Su, also a kayaker and mountaineer.

The dragon boat event is part of the Bogo City’s fiesta celebration which will also have its annual bacarera race.

“We have lots of potential dragon boat paddlers especially in the municipalities and provinces of Cebu,” Su added.

CPSC is planning to buy two units of 10-satr dragon boats, which will be used for the training of CPSC’s dragon boat teams.

Each unit, which will cost PHP150,000, will be made by a Bohol-based manufacturer.

"We also want to hold an international dragon boat race here in Cebu soon,” Su said. (PNA) FFC/LCM/LOLITO T. DELOS REYES/LDP

CEBU’s Jan Godfrey “Noynoy” Seno returns to Cebu and eyes joining his last Palarong Pambansa 2015 stint before flying back to the US for good.
 Jan Godfrey D. Seno

Seno, 15, of Bogo City, a former tennis varsity player of the University of San Carlos-Basic Education Department (USC-BED), flew to California, US, with his father, Noel, last July after being invited to play in a prestigious sectional tournament in northern California with Macmac Tabo-tabo.

After an impressive finalist finish, several coaches advised him to stay behind because they saw his potential. Seno opted to stay in Colorado with a relative and enrolled at the Sand Creek High School.

With only three weeks in Colorado, he immediately carved a name in the history of tennis in Sand Creek High School after helping his team end the 15-year reign of Cheyenne Mountain High School in the Class 4A Region 6 tournament.

Seno beat Cheyenne Mountain No. 1 player Luca Stanciuco of Romania.

“It was a very memorable experience. During our game, he was very aggressive to win, but when I was already leading with 5-0, he seems to feel weary, probably because of pressure. He was representing the school that has dominated the tournament for 15
years,” said Seno, now stands 5’11 tall.

Seno said he observed that the support from schools in the US is very different compared to the Philippines.

“Schools were very supportive, they provide food, drinks for their players, even set up tents in the venue to show support,” said Seno.

Seno said that in Cebu, particularly, tennis courts are a scarcity. Courts are everywhere in the US, he said.

“In one place, you can find more than 12 tennis courts, but I have observed that only
few are into tennis compared here where there are so many kids who are interested in the sport, but the courts are limited,” said Seno.

Seno enjoyed his stay in Colorado because he was able to play against different athletes who are from different nationalities.
